Mission Statement

Discipleship Year transforms participants through their work in inner-city ministries, their life together in Intentional Christian Community, their study of servant leadership, nonviolence and social justice at the Servant Leadership School and their worship with the faith communities of the Church of the Saviour (this is optional). The program emphasizes the inward/outward journey of the Christian walk and nurtures disciples to seek justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God.

Description

Discipleship Year is a year-long residential experience in Washington, DC, engaging volunteers with issues of social justice and servant leadership. Volunteers live in intentional community within a Christian setting. They enter into theological study/reflection through classes at the Servant Leadership School and work in one of the Church of the Saviour ministries (or affiliated program). The ministries include an employment counseling program, teaching Latina women computer skills and English (no need for bilingual skills to start), teaching adults GED level classes, working as an 'associate in ministry' with a radical alternative form of church and more (www.festivalcenter.org)

Organizational Statement of Faith

Discipleship Year interprets the call to discipleship as the integration of two journeys - an inward journey to grow in love of God, self and others and an outward journey to meet basic human needs and address injustice in our society.
