YMCA—Roxbury, Ma
YMCA—Roxbury, Massachusetts.
OVERVIEW
In the city of Boston, there is continued need for programs that reach out to the teens in the community. There are very few that do this in a way that helps to foster the recreational and athletic worlds of teenagers. Although this program seeks to do just that, the YMCA also offers other types of support to teens.
To provide a save environment to meet the social, physical, intellectual, and cultural needs of the community.
The goal of the Roxbury YMCA is to reach families and offer a place for them to enrich their social, physical, and intellectual lives. The YMCA also offers individuals ways to develop their bodies, unleash their creativity, learn skills, and act on social skills.
The following are a handful of the multitude of programs aimed at meeting the needs of young people: English classes, day care, pregnant teen services, classes in drugs and alcohol use and abuse, nonviolence classes, arts and crafts, after school programs (such as gym and swim), judo lessons, basketball leagues, swimming lessons, lifeguard courses, recreation rooms, aerobics, weight training, volleyball, soccer, racquetball, softball, baseball, cheerleaders, and camps. There are also leadership training classes.
TONE AND TESTIMONIES OF PROGRAM
The facility of the YMCA is huge. There is an awesome feeling when you enter off the street. The staff is very cordial and the place is clean. Teens have good things to say about the YMCA: "I love this place because I can lift, swim, and play basketball all in one day. I feel like a millionaire in my own mansion."
IMPLICATIONS
- This program is excellent for kids. There are ones similar throughout the country and in other parts of the world. Although it is more expensive than the Boys Club, you get more for your money.
- There is a faint Christian influence among the staff members. This will encourage kids toward stronger values and morals for their own lives.
- Good atmosphere for kids. When kids feel someone is interested in them, they respond positively.
- Youth leaders need to encourage more programs of this type, particularly in areas that provide no recreation for kids beyond the streets.
