Summary:

The National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE®) is a nonprofit foundation working to supply all Americans with the information and skills necessary to have control of their personal finances.  Alongside other like-minded organizations, NEFE® provides financial education through funding, logistical support, and financial planning expertise.  They also underwrite grants, fellowships and research projects and aid in the exploration of new ideas in personal finance.  The NEFE® desires to help all Americans be stronger in personal finance, creating their own financial security and preparing well for retirement. NEFE® works to achieve their goals through four areas:  education programs, collaborative programs, multimedia access, and innovative thinking.

Why does FASTEN recommend this resource?

NEFE® has a special interest in helping youth develop good personal finance skills and in supporting those with unique needs, such as:

    • the newly widowed or divorced, especially women;
    • those transitioning from welfare to the marketplace;
    • single parents;
    • immigrant populations; and
    • institutionalized populations (residents of substance abuse centers, prisoners returning to society, etc.).

They concentrate especially on the underprivileged who might not otherwise receive financial education.
