Summary:

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA) is devoted helping Americans understand the economic cost and social impact of substance abuse, designing and implementing demonstration programs, evaluating treatment approaches, and providing tools for service providers.  One of CASA's initiatives, created in 2001, is Family Day: A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children.  Family Day, celebrated on the fourth Monday in September, was designed to promote family dinners as a means of reducing substance abuse among teens and children.  In addition, CASA holds conferences aimed at raising awareness, encouraging new research and providing continuing education for substance abuse professionals.
