$200M PTSD Study Offers New Hope for U.S. Veterans

This summer, the Pentagon has committed to spend over $200 million to study the effects of post-tramautic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury on veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The study will cover both new medications and new treatment methods to help lessen the stigma of seeking help, and is expected to benefit civilians as well.
U.S. Homelessness Reportedly Drops 30% in Past 2 Years

From 2005 to 2007, the number of chronically homeless persons in the U.S. has reportedly dropped 30%, from 175,914 to 123,833. The "housing first" policy adopted by government agencies in the past 8 years may in part be responsible.

Activists Resist Evictions, Predatory Lending in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Alliance Against Predatory Lending is pushing for a six-month moratorium on housing foreclosures in Massachusetts, in an effort to counter the effects of predatory lending. Three bills currently in the legislature will help low-income residents keep their homes.

Sudan's President Indicted for Genocide

This Monday, the International Criminal Court charged Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir with 10 courts of war crimes for his involvement in the Darfur genocide. However, Sudan does not recognize the ICC, and this action may lead to reprisals against foreign aid workers in the nation.

Under current U.S. law, spouses of American citizens are being denied citizenship if their spouse died before their application could be processed. Surviving Spouses Against Deportation is working to raise Congressional support for HR 6034, a bill to end this unjustifiable practice.
