Managing a Job Retention Program for Ex-Offenders

By T.A. Ryan, American Correctional Association, 2005

Summary:

This book is intended for program planners who are establishing job-retention programs for ex-offenders.  Dr. T.A. Ryan is a distinguished faculty member at the University of South Carolina and has written extensively on a number of issues related to prisoner re-entry.  The premise of this work is that job-retention is central in the fight against recidivism.  Therefore, this work is fundamentally an attempt to guide program directors in bridging the cultural divide between life in the correctional system and full-time employment.  After stating the book’s purpose, Dr. Ryan discusses a number of best practices in creating and managing a job-retention program.  Chapter two of the book is a general model for a job-retention program that addresses all the needs of prisoners both before their release date and while on the outside.  The third chapter provides the reader with necessary guidance for implementing the program model discussed in chapter two.  Included in this chapter are issues such as efficiency and cost effectiveness.  Chapter four is a conclusion to this short book and reemphasizes the value of an effective job-retention program in the overall attempt to reduce recidivism.

Why does FASTEN recommend this resource?

This book is particularly of help to those who are interested in a scholarly, comprehensive look at the best practices of job-retention programs.  Although clearly written by an academic, the value of this work is the obvious competence of the author.  We recommend this book for program planners who are evaluating the employment services they provide to ex-offenders and are in need of a better understanding of all the issues involved.
