Study Shows Congregations Becoming More Racially Diverse
From Sojourners: For over 150 years, Christians have largely attended racially homogeneous congregations, and the question of how to change this has not been an easy one. However, the National Congregations Study, conducted by Mark Chaves, has shown that churches have become more diverse in the past decade, with large Protestant churches leading the way.
Since 1998 there has been a boom in the attention devoted to this issue, and large Protestant churches have used innovation and their greater funding, larger staffs, and programs to effectively recruit across racial barriers. However, there is still a long way to go; as of 2007, more than nine out of 10 Christian churches were at least 80% one racial group. Are we taking our first steps towards knocking down the Christian color wall?
