Kristan Helps Cancer Patients "Look Good, Feel Better"
Kristan, who lives in Toronto, connected with the "Look Good, Feel Better" Foundation through ChristianVolunteering.org. There she helped cancer patients regain their self-confidence, showing them ways to cope with the "cosmetic-related effects of cancer and cancer treatments."
While volunteering, Kristan led a special workshop in which she "demonstrated skin care for sensitive skin, make-up application and headscarf tying techniques. Each of the attendees received a gift package that included a collection of products related to the demonstrations [she] was giving." Companies had donated all the necessary items, such as cleansers, moisturizers, makeup, and scarves.
Kristan learned a great deal from her volunteer experience. "Sometimes," she says, "the effortless giving of myself translates into a person I didn't know I was...and I gain insight into people and life and how we are all connected. Volunteering has exposed me to some of the more incredible people I have met in my lifetime, showed me some ways that I would like, or aspire, to be. And other times, volunteering has reminded me that I feel really good when I do well!"
If you want to try volunteering, she says, "think very carefully about where you think you can make the best contribution - and then show up and do just that!"
