Kathy Hyden's Story: Being Trained Practically For Ministry as a Shelter Director
I had already accepted the job as Shelter Director a few months before I graduated and I've been there close to 2 years, have a $300,000 budget for a 30 bed homeless shelter, most of the residents are mentally ill or suffer from addictions, hence the homelessness. Right from day one I used the training from City Vision College (formally Rescue College). One of my first tasks was to terminate and rehire and I referred to the legal book from one of the classes. It was very concise & practical information that I needed. I also used the question format for hiring that I got from one of the teachers in my interviews. I would have been totally helpless in the kitchen without the class on food safety! I have to supervise the kitchen that feeds our residents and the cook knew more than I did! I referred to many of the books and materials I received through the college and feel like the training I received was the ONLY thing that prepared me; not my previous 6 years at Texas A&M or SIU-E!
