Locations and Hours:

Generally, individuals may volunteer most any time from 8:30am until 9:00pm everyday of the week. However, there are exceptions. Generally, volunteers are needed at these jail facilities:

Duties:           
The Volunteer Reentry Coordinator (VRC) is an individual who works with inmates to assist them with their reentry planning and focuses primarily on the following areas of need: 
 
-Housing                    
-Substance Abuse Treatment / Prevention
-Employment             
-Income / Benefits
-Health                       
-Transportation
 
The VRC’s primary responsibility is to gain an awareness of the inmate’s needs when released, inform them of the resources available to them and then make an effort to link the inmate with those sources of assistance when released.
 
The VRC will work closely with MDCR staff to gain access and assist the inmates nearing release from jail.
 
Supervision: 
The VRC will receive supervision from the Reentry Unit of the Program Services Division. Prior to the commencement of their volunteering, each VRC will apply for Volunteer Identification through the procedure established for that purpose and will receive orientation to the facility.
 
Illustrative Tasks:
-The VRC will maintain a list of inmates who receive a county jail sentence and schedule a meeting to conduct a needs assessment with that inmate,
-The VRC will provide the inmate with a Reentry Resource Guide and other information indicating forms of assistance that the inmate can apply for when released,
-The VRC will assist the inmate with any post-release services which require advanced notice prior to the inmate’s release from jail,
-The VRC will coordinate these services with Jail Operations staff in the assigned jail facility,
-The VRC will provide weekly reports indicating the number of inmates served and address any operational issues.
