Summary:

This guide describes what a “job shadow” is (a worksite experience typically lasting 3 to 6 hours). This program manual for the staff/directors includes advice on setting up the program, assessing student’s interests and matching them to appropriate job site visits, recruiting and orienting employers, and connecting the on-the-job experience with in-class learning. A “useful tools” section provides sample forms and fact sheets for students, parents, and worksite hosts.

Why  does FASTEN recommend this resource?

This guide de-mystifies the process for setting up a job shadow program and its guidance is relevant as well to launching and operating longer-term worksite experiences, such as internships.  It also provides the program director with suggested activities to prepare students for their worksite experience and to debrief their experiences as a group.
