Information about FUMC:

After several trips through the wilderness on horseback and after having to preach in a barn, Methodist Bishop Francis Asbury recommended to the people of Clarksburg station that they should build a church.  The year was 1788, and that first church was made of logs.  Many years and buildings have passed, but FUMC has been a source of healing and hope for the citizens of Clarksburg ever since.

Presently, FUMC of Clarksburg has an active congregation whose members and youth participate in a variety of weekly activities.  These include the youth-focused Breakaway Café followed by All in the Family each Wednesday night. Church school begins each Sunday at 9:30 AM.  The Youth also meet on Sunday nights at 5:30 pm for choir practice followed by recreation time and ministry in the Safe Room.

Worship is central to the FUMC Clarksburg experience. The pastors, lay leaders, music staff and Chancel Choir are dedicated to leading meaningful and uplifting worship experiences. Our regular worship service is at 10:45 AM every Sunday morning. Communion is served the first Sunday of each month.

In a recent survey (February 2008), the congregation was asked about the church’s greatest strengths concerning youth ministry.  The following are a few of the answers youth, parents, members and leaders provided:

·        Supportive parents

·        Supportive staff

·        Great facility including gymnasium and large kitchen

·        Opportunity for ministry / outreach in a downtown setting

·        Volunteer support

·        An atmosphere conducive to youth activities

·        Opportunity to serve in a city full of youth disconnected to church and often family

·        Financial support

·        Healthy network of local churches engaged in youth ministry

·        Great focal point for urban mission work

Information about Clarksburg, WV:

Clarksburg was incorporated by the Virginia Assembly in 1785 after settlers in this north-central part of (West) Virginia named the hamlet in honor of George Rogers Clark sometime between 1778 and 1781. The city now has about 18,000 citizens and is located at the center of West Virginia's Interstate-79, High-Tech Corridor.

Educational opportunities abound in the area including a campus of Fairmont State University located in Clarksburg.  Other nearby institutions of higher learning include West Virginia University, Salem International University, Alderson-Broaddus College, and West Virginia Wesleyan College.

The city of Clarksburg is one of the largest in the region.  Historically, the community was a rich industrial leader with three major glass factories and a regional warehousing center.  The city remains financially viable due to significant retail enterprises on the edge of the city near I-79.  However, much of the downtown, where the church is located, is in need of economic revitalization and community development.  The potential for a dynamic community-changing youth ministry at FUMC is substantial.

Procedure for Application:

Please send a one-page resume and a one-page double-spaced essay via (snail) mail by April 15, 2008 detailing your ability to fulfill the responsibilities and expectations outlined above.  A pool of candidates will be selected for telephone interviews with the search committee.  After a thorough background check, the top candidates will be invited on an all expense paid trip to Clarksburg for a personal interview, which will include formal meetings with various committees, an informal gathering with youth, a teaching demonstration with youth and the search committee, a meeting with parents, and a belching demonstration.  (Candidates who are belch-impaired are still welcome to apply, as we are more concerned with issues of character, integrity, relationality and love!)
