Summary:
The Jewish Institute for Youth and Family, Inc. works toward creating a union between Jewish traditional values and a successful lifestyle in today’s America. The JIYF is concerned about the teaching of Jewish religious schools today; they believe that the very soul of Judaism--dedication to ethics and moral behavior--is often being neglected. JIYF seeks to reverse that trend with innovative and enjoyable programs that steer clear of mundane textbook learning. JIYF offers this program through a series of 4 teen-parent workshops entitled Becoming a Mentsh. The four workshops target different age groups and focus on different topics:
- “What is a Mentsh?”, designed for grade 7 and discussing Jewish ethics and how they affect the self and others;
- “Shalom Bayit,” designed for grade 8 and focusing on parent-teen responsibilities, communication, and problem-solving;
- “Passionate Decisions,” designed for grade 9 and tackling the difficult issues of sex, self-control, love, and marriage; and
- “Making Peace with Your Future,” designed for grade 10 and centering on career, identity, and fulfillment.
Why does FASTEN recommend this resource?
In order to allow Judaism to fit into a modern lifestyle, JIYF consults with Jewish educators, psychologists, and rabbis to gain insights on how youth can deal with the challenges they face. Youth are trained to creatively apply the traditional values of their religion to their lives. JIYF hopes to not only enable young people to tackle their challenges ethically and successfully but also to instill a dedication to Judaism in these students. |
