Please Pray … Now. Prayer Alerts from a 24-Hour Personal News Cycle

7/31 UPDATE

Baby Cyrus’ fever spiked to 104 last night, and Diana woke up feverish this morning. Yesterday, my nephew was also diagnosed with Swine Flu. Thanks for continuing to pray.
______________

From derelict blogcationer to fervent prayer solicitor, news from the last 24-hour personal news cycle reminds me that the faith journey never ends. Please join me in praying for:

1) Youth ministry veteran X, who was rushed into emergency surgery last week to remove a cancerous tumor after sudden and severe stomach pains. The doctors won’t know for another two weeks whether the cancer spread, which will determine future treatment options. X is married with three small children.

By the time this posts, we should have arrived in Miami where tomorrow we embark on our first ever family cruise with my parents, brothers, sister, our spouses, and children. That’s the boat we’ll be cruising, the Carnival Valor from Miami to Grand Cayman Island, to Isla Roatan (Honduras), Belize, and finally Cozumel, Mexico.

I intend to fully unplug from all manner of electronica for the next nine days (except perhaps an occasional Tweet). See you when we return from Blogcation.

Jeremy Del Rio: Changing the Odds: Harlem Children’s Zone Project (January 2008, Case Study)

Below is a case study of one of the premier youth development agencies in the nation, what the New York Times Magazine calls: “one of the great social experiments of our time.” Eventually, I’m going to edit this down into an article of some kind. In the meantime, enjoy.

Hollywood loves against all odds success stories. But if Harlem Children’s Zone founder and CEO Geoffrey Canada has his way, Central Harlem won’t be providing any more of those plot-lines in the future.

Jeremy Del Rio: 20/20 Vision for Schools: Transforming Public Education within a Single Generation of Students ((January 2008, Tri-State Voice)

[Ed Note: This article originally appeared in the January 2008 issue of Tri-State Voice and was syndicated nationally.]

Youth Pastor Edwin Pacheco is on a mission to save New York City’s public schools.

But unlike some of who prefer a fire and brimstone approach, Pacheco’s primary concern isn’t escape from hell.  It’s God’s kingdom “on earth as it is in heaven,” and it responds in real time to the felt-needs of real youth in his community.
