Goes Beyond Ecoawareness

I picked up Sleeth's book thinking it would be another "how to" book on being ecofriendly or another 101 things I could do. But actually, whether Sleeth realizes it or not, he has written a book that's more about Christians being Christians and not conforming to the world than it is about the environment. There's a strong theme here about how Christians, like everyone else, has been caught up in the rat race: Work before family, spending outside our means, wasting money and resources on things we don't need, slaves to television, trying to keep up with everyone else, etc. Sure, caring about God's planet comes into play, as does our health, but it all arises out a more fundamental call: Living like Christians and not like everyone else. Had we not stopped doing this, no one would be attacking Christians and they'd be looking to us for leadership on all these issues, including the environment. Yes, sometimes Sleeth strays as in his belief in the Global Warming Hoax and in his hatred of SUVs (he seems to think there's something wrong with people wanting safer cars. Yes, some people just buy them to be "cool" like they are still in high school, but not everyone is like that). There are SUVs just as efficient as his eco pop can car. Overall, however, this is an interesting and important book.
Cute Stories no deep theology

This book is a quick read for the average person and will get one excited about reducing their desire for "more." It has many personal stories, and presents a few basic biblical principles to go along. In that sense it's a good book. However if your looking for a strong theological book that discuss in depth what a Christians responsibility is to the world this isn't the book for you. As I read the book I kept asking the question "When is the introduction to this book going to end and the meat of the book begin?"
Well-meaning but too repetitive

I can't question the validity or sincerity of the author's arguments. If you are an evangelical Christian who has never thought much about the relationship between the Gospel and our stewardship of the earth, you will likely find this book a convincing "call to action." If you are a long-time environmentalist, Christian or not, much of it will be familiar ground. In either event, the book is numbingly repetitive; it could have made its points in half as many pages.
stand up work on what seems to be a controversial topic

An excellent read. Great thoughts from a different perspective on these things. Love his thoughts on consumerism as well...sleeth doesn't pull any punches in putting the honus(sp) on us as Christians when it comes to the wasteful consumer driven lives we tend to lead. If you are interested in thinking about and reading about a Christian stand on environmental views...read this book.
Perfect to get you started!

This is an excellent book directed at Christians describing our calling to care for this planet we've been given. It is the first book I have seen to integrate scripture into how we should be stewarding our planet. Serve God, Save the Planet is a great overview of Dr Sleeth's life and personal decisions and it served as a "jump start" for my own life. Since reading it, our family has made several changes to be better stewards of what God has given to us. While it is not an comprehensive study on "green" living (personally, I feel it's a hefty subject and needs volumes), this book is friendly enough in the approach and will challenge you to make simple changes in your every day life. Read it with an open heart and mind.
