The General Program that is responsible for supporting public interest related items such as the media (i.e.--public radio, documentary programming, etc.) and work that explores the use of digital technologies that aid in reaching and engaging the public.
The MacArthur Fellows Program which awards five year, unrestricted fellowships to individuals that show strong merit and promise in academia
International issues (i.e.--human rights, international justice, peace and security, etc.)
Issues that primarily affect the United States such as community and economic development and housing
Interest media such as public radio, documentary based programming, and works that explore the use of digital technologies that reach and engage the public
Fellowship based funding for students that exhibit great promise and potential
The foundation asks that all letters of inquiries should NOT be sent by fax. Send it by mail to the office of Grants Management or by E-mail. Direct applications for MacArthur Fellows programs are also not accepted. Grants increasingly initiated by the board.

Must submit a letter of inquiry that includes a cover sheet. According to the MacArthur foundation website, the cover sheet should have the following information:
- Information regarding who will carry out the work
- Name of your organization (and acronym if commonly used)
- Name of parent organization, if any
- Name of chief executive officer or person holding similar position
- Organization’s address (and courier address if different)
- Organization’s phone number, fax number, and e-mail address, if any
- Name and title of the principal contact person, if different from the above
- Address (and courier address if different), phone number, and fax number of principal contact
- E-mail address of principal contact
- Web address, if any.
