The Ford Foundation awards grants nationally and globally (including Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Russia, Latin America, and the Caribbean).

Funding Limitations: 

The foundation does not provide support for programs that already receive substantial support from the government.  The Ford Foundation does not award grants for routine operation costs, building construction or maintenance, educational scholarships (undergraduate), graduate fellowships, nor personal or local needs.

 

The foundation also does not award grants to organizations that emphasize religious sectarian programs or activities.

The Ford Foundation is interested in providing support for organiations devoted to strengthening democratic values, reducing poverty and social injustice, supporting human achievement and international cooperation. The foundation's grants focus on three categories: 1) community development and asset building; 2) knowledge, creativity, and freedom; 3) social justice and peace initiatives.

Application Procedures: 

The foundation asks that all applicants should review the official website for guidelines. From there, applicants will then be asked to apply through a letter or an online submission through the foundation website.


An application form is not required.

Applications written in French, Spanish, and Russian can also be accepted.

Primary funds organizations that are based in North Carolina, but has a history of allocating funds to organizations based in Florida, Missouri, New York, Virginia, California, Georgia and South Carolina.

Funding Limitations: 

Applicants must classified under Sections 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; they must also be classified as a public charity. However, churches and governmental agencies are exempted from this rule.

The Foundation generally will provide funding for capital improvements, project support or special programs.  However, the Foundation is not necessarily interested in funding operational support.

The Foundation heavily funds Cabarrus County [located in North Carolina], but will also consider funding in the great North Carolina area.  Though preference is giving to the North Carolina area, they will consider other areas of the United States. 

The Foundation will not fund individual grants.

The Foundation will not create grants for to endowment funds.

The Foundation will not allocate funding to pay off loans, nor will it allocate grants for fellowship, scholarship, or endowment purposes.

The Foundation will not make multiyear pledges; according to the Foundation's website "a minimum of one year is required between proposals from all applicants whether the request was approved or declined."

According to the Foundation's website, "frequent grants are not made to the same organization unless requests are substantially different from previous requests."

Start up funding for a project still in its infancy is not allocated by the Foundation.

Applicants must demonstrate that their organization can financially sustain themselves on a continual basis.
