The foundation does not provide support for programs that already receive substantial support from the government. The Ford Foundation does not award grants for routine operation costs, building construction or maintenance, educational scholarships (undergraduate), graduate fellowships, nor personal or local needs.
The foundation also does not award grants to organizations that emphasize religious sectarian programs or activities.
The Ford Foundation is interested in providing support for organiations devoted to strengthening democratic values, reducing poverty and social injustice, supporting human achievement and international cooperation. The foundation's grants focus on three categories: 1) community development and asset building; 2) knowledge, creativity, and freedom; 3) social justice and peace initiatives.

Generally fund organization's located in the Western Michigan area; preference given to projects in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area.
Will generally consider capital projects that seek LEED certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s guidelines
