The President's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships on March 9th reported some 60 recommendations to the administration covering a wide range of ways to improve how the government works with, supports, and learns from faith-based and secular organizations.

Over the next ten years 275,000 American adults will die prematurely because they lack health insurance according to research done by advocacy group Families USA. The primary reasons would be lack of access to medical care outside the emergency room and the bypassing of routine and preventative care do to cost. While members of Congress in both parties grapple with the political consequences of healthcare reform, Families USA argues that the very human consequences should be paramount. Immigrants' rights advocates are outraged at the conditions people face in immigrant detention centers. Many are routinely mistreated, abused, and sick immigrants are often refused treatment. Deaths usually go unreported. More humane alternatives to detention which include electronic monitoring and reporting are significantly cheaper and effective but corporate jail interests would likely disagree. Read more...

The article briefly delves into the history of the separation of Church and State in America and points out that what we do or don't do as faith communities has political consequences. What are your thoughts? Do you think that politics are separate from our lives as Christians?
As of 2008, the suburbs are now home to nearly one-third of the U.S. poor. Having grown by 25 percent since 2000, this rate has grown five times faster than non-suburban areas. The latest report by Brookings states that large suburban areas have almost 1.5 million more poor residents than their primary cities. Read more here

The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and African Methodist Episcopal Church have come together for the first time in nearly 50 years to address social issues affecting the African American community. Hosting a historic gathering this March in Columbia, S.C. called the "Great Gathering," the coalition will join hands in faith to address some of the social issues affecting the African American community.
