Summary:

This website is run by the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign and the first thing visitors will notice are the sharp, edgy graphics and the variety of resources just a click away.  The site appeals to teens with offers of free stuff (ring tones for cell phones, posters and e-cards), interactive quizzes, and bulletin boards.  The four main areas of the website are:

  • Drug Facts: Freevibe offers the definitive online resource for scientific information about illegal drugs and the effects they have.  Real consequences are presented drug by drug.  Visitors can analyze the messages that movies, music, and other media send about drug use.  Visitors can also test their PPF (peer pressure factor) in a virtual scenario.
  • In the News: Freevibe is committed to keeping up on current events and breaking trends.  This section offers true stories from news headlines, personal interviews with teens and experts about life, drugs, and peer pressure.  Freevibe's investigative series undercovers how drugs destroy the environment, impair driving, and affect sexual health.
  • Share Your Story: This section is devoted to telling others what's going on in your life and your community by posting on the message boards.  Visitors can give Freevibe feedback on the site, join the I-Count Advisor teen trend panel, and send a friend an e-card.
  • Step Up: Teens looking to talk with a friend who's using drugs or alcohol can find information on how to help (Freevibe's Action Guide) and how to start the conversation.  A listing of phone numbers and experts is included for teens that need to speak to someone immediately.

Why does FASTEN recommend this resource?

The National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign is a project by the U.S. government dedicated to presenting accurate facts, figures and consequences of drug and alcohol use by teens.  This website is perfect for youth leaders or educators seeking reliable information about drugs and the physical, psychological and emotional havoc they can wreak.  It is also a positive site for teens to visit to get information for themselves and to learn how to talk to their friends about substance use and abuse.
