Why does FASTEN recommend this resource?

A strong mentoring relationship with a caring adult is a terrific way to help steer youth away from violence and substance abuse.  These booklets offer mentoring program coordinators some powerful and practical tools to give to volunteer mentors to help them build relationships with their new “mentees.” The activities and ideas included are specifically designed to help the mentoring relationship grow.  They include age-appropriate topics that may be of interest to mentees.

LEADERSHIP RESOURCE

Leadership Bookshelf: An Annotated Bibliography

(FASTEN, 2007)

Resource Type: brief annotated bibliography

Audience: Church and ministry leaders wanting an introduction to a few key books regarding leading church-based transformational community ministries

*******************************

·  The Intentional Church:  Moving from Church Success to Community Transformation, Randy Pope (Moody, 2006)

Pastor Randy Pope from PerimeterChurch in Atlanta offers The Intentional Church, a book that guides churches to critical self-evaluation, Christ-centered mission, and mature leadership.  Pope’s central theme is helping churches become a “transformational church” – a church that follows Jesus’ call to engage in active spiritual warfare against Satan.  He cautions readers against what he says as common problems in the American Protestant church – too much focus on education (to the neglect of prayer, worship, and outreach) and too much focus on caring for the congregation (to the neglect of seeking the lost).  Pope encourages churches to leave behind the careful, defensive church that often prevails in America to become a church that transforms its people and its community in the name of Christ.

·  Leading the Team-Based Church:  How Pastors and Church Staffs Can Grow Together into a Powerful Fellowship of Leaders, George Cladis.  (Jossey-Bass, 1999).  www.josseybass.com.  $23.95

This Leadership Network book shows pastoral leaders how to become both more godly and effective.  The congregation’s health is dynamically affected by the health of the leadership, Cladis explains, and in this book he guides readers to reshape their leadership and achieve new vitality.  Leadership in the church should be modeled on the theological concept of the Trinity, which practically results in team-based leadership.  Cladis explains the theological background of his argument as well as how it is most effective in our postmodern world.  He then explains each of seven teams that congregations should form, including their role and the practical steps needed to create and strengthen these teams.

Summary:

While providing individuals with safety nets, rental assistance, and supplementary income can keep them from sinking further into poverty, seldom does such aid provide the helping hand needed to pull them completely out. Increasingly, however, Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) are providing the means by which individuals can climb completely out of poverty by providing them with matching funds they can put towards purchasing a home, starting their own business, or going to school. This practical and comprehensive handbook provides you with everything you need to know about creating an IDA program from scratch.

The handbook begins with an overview of IDAs, then walks you step by step through the process of creating your own program. It contains the following chapters:

Chapter 1: About IDAs

Chapter 2: Building Blocks-Feasibility Assessment, How to Conduct a Focus Group, etc.

Chapter 3: Starting the Program/Program Structure-Staffing, Legal Issues, etc.

Chapter 4: Program Management-Budgeting, Funding, Record Keeping, etc.

Chapter 5: Financial Education and Training-Developing a Training Method, etc.

Chapter 6: Program Implementation: Recruitment, Retaining Program Participants, etc.

The book comes with a CD packed full of a wide range of resources designed to save you time and keep you from having to reinvent the wheel. Over fifty model documents or forms are offered as either Word files or Excel spreadsheets. Flack, Grossman, and Dalley also provide helpful appendices on a variety of topics: from Selected Publications on Asset-building and IDA’s to The Top Ten Lessons from IDA Practice.

Why does FASTEN recommend this resource?

Comprehensive, systematic, and detailed, this handbook covers all the bases. Very useful for even veteran IDA program managers, it is absolutely essential for those with little or no experience.
