Staying In School: How Two Faith-Based Initiatives in Phoenix Are Keeping High-Risk Teens on the Path to Success

By Amy L. Sherman (Sagamore Institute Faith in Communities, 2004)

Sunny Phoenix is the site of two successful faith-based initiatives encouraging school retention by high-risk Hispanic and Native American youth. Neighborhood Ministries operates the “I Can Do It” program, an impressive, multi-faceted partnership with over 30 public schools. New Beginnings Church has launched its own charter high school, James Sandoval Prep, offering a “family-feel” small school that is succeeding with kids tossed out of traditional public schools.

This in-depth case study describes the background and development of these programs, the challenges they have faced, and the lessons learned.

Paul Washer - Shocking Message (full length)

This is a shockingly powerful & Biblical message preached to about 5,000 youth in a day when youth are appealed to through shallow and worldly means. At one point in this sermon the 5,000 youth are clapping and yelling but then the preacher makes a comment that changes the whole atmosphere to where you could have heard a pin drop... As you can imagine, the preacher was never invited back.

Toronto Update

From the moment these 34 individuals stepped outside their vehicles with hearts and bags full, they had no idea what this week would hold.
The first group to arrive was from Michigan, who had already come last year! As their 34 legs stepped out of the vans, you could see the twinkle in their eyes as they braced themselves for "another" week here in Toronto. They were so remarkably impacted by the people they served, the stories they heard, and the things they saw, so much that they took this programming back home to serve those in their own communities.

Trying to be the next superstar?

I have a question for you: Who do you worship? Sounds like a joke, right? You're probably thinking something like, "This girl is trippin'. I'm on a Christian website- who else but God would I be worshiping?" Well, many people say this, but do they REALLY feel this way?

Is your biggest desire to glorify God?.. or do you thirst to glorify yourself more than him? Do you crave to be famous more than you crave to hang out with our Savior? Do you seek after that girl/dude down the block more than you do our God? Take a step back and really examine where you stand with our Father. I pray that He's number one in your life. If he isn't- PLEASE MAKE A CHANGE MY SYBLING. Jesus says that we should not be striving to achieve status on this earth, but striving to achieve status in Heaven. I'm sure you want to know how we can do this. So let's cut to the chase and get to it- I'm not going to "sugar-coat" this and say that it's easy, because it's not- but we must humble ourselves like small children to be among the greatest in heaven. (Matthew 18) Now, don't get this twisted. Humbling yourself before God does not mean looking as if you have no money and as if you have no confidence, it means that you TOTALLY obey God and listen to what he has to say (Just like a small child obeys and listens to his parents). We have got to trust in the fact that God is in control of our lives and knows what is best for us.

Are we ready to do this? If so, we can start by getting to know God and what he says in His word. Trust me, we won't regret it.

Take a look at this music video of a Christian rapper named Trip Lee. It hits home when it comes to our society today and where we as Christians stand. It's time to stop worshiping things that are going to perish and invest in a God who is ETERNAL!!! PRAISE HIM!

Serving the Good King

I recently pulled my copy of CS Lewis' The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe off the shelf and read back over some of my favorite passages. There's one conversation in particular that I'm continually drawn back to:

"Is-is he a man?" asked Lucy.

"Aslan a man!" said Mr Beaver sternly. "Certainly not. I tell you he is the King of the wood and the son of the great Emperor-beyond-the-Sea. Don't you know who is the King of Beasts? Aslan is a lion - the Lion, the great Lion."

Authentic Compassion

I am reading a book that a former staff member blessed me with called: Here and Now by Henri Nouwen. An excerpt out of the book is called "From Competition to Compassion".

"Compassion - which means, literally, 'to suffer with' - is the way to the truth that we are ourselves, not when we differ from others, but when we are the same."
....
"It is not "excelling" but "serving" that makes us most human. It is not proving ourselves to be better than others but confessing to be just like others that is the way to healing and reconciliation."

DC Reflection: Some Great Kids

I got to spend the past week with some great kids from Crosspointe Church in Washington D.C. working with the Center for Student Missions organization.  Our high school kids took a short term mission trip to our nation’s capital to serve the poor and homeless for a week.
The majority of these kids had never served in this manner before and it was, to say the least, an eye opening experience for them.  I would even say that it removed them from their comfort zone of Apex and Cary.
