Summer Staff

Organization:

The Pittsburgh Project

Our summer jobs are engaging, fun, and filled with daily opportunities for relational ministry among kids, senior citizens, and neighbors. We train you for a full week or more, so you?ll be well-prepared. We serve meals while programs are in session, and we have free housing in dorm-style suites (with private bathrooms) if you need it. Our staff worships together regularly, and relaxes together from time to time. You?ll make scores of friends while being part of a significant movement of God in the city.

Service Camp Groups

Organization:

The Pittsburgh Project

Groups serving Pittsburgh?s vulnerable homeowners have made amazing connections at The Pittsburgh Project over the past 22 years. Through our Service Camps, over 20,000 young people and their leaders have repaired over 1400 homes all over the city. They have built friendships, repaired homes, and seen hope abound.

Families, college students, adult groups, and high school groups may serve together on our one-day or weekend camps. Our week-long summer sessions offer packed experiences for high school or junior high groups. We also have a week-long camp to accommodate mixed-age groups. All our service opportunities include meaningful home repair, dynamic worship, great music, powerful teaching, and opportunities to build bridges with people of other races, ages, and socioeconomic groups.

While serving with The Pittsburgh Project, participants connect to a growing year-round urban ministry that is a part of the fabric of our neighborhood. Two-thirds of our year-round staff live within walking distance of our building. Our daily work includes leadership development among urban youth, so that all who participate in our programs are trained as servant leaders for the future of the city.

We invite you to join in the ministry of The Pittsburgh Project for any of our trips. Please register as soon as you can -- summer sessions start to fill in the fall. Check out our website for the latest list of sessions open for registration. To reserve your group?s spots, please download of Service Camp brochure in PDF at our website.

Laying a healthy church foundation for outreach:

These experienced, nationally respected organizations can come alongside you on your missional journey. Each has information, programs, and contacts to offer congregations that want to make a difference.

Note: This web content reflects the contents of an informational CD-rom produced by Evangelicals for Social Action's Word & Deed Network.  If you find the resources presented here helpful, feel free to purchase this CD-rom from ESA's resources located at this link.  Also, while this CD-rom is a solid foundation for understanding holistic ministry, we especially recommend the Holistic Ministry Starter Kit, which is available from the same page as above.  This Kit is not only an excellent value, but also will provide a church with the resources needed to not only continue thinking holistically about ministry, but develop programs and initiatives that facilitate the Kingdom's in-breaking.

Becoming a Church that Makes a Difference: Ventures in Holistic Ministry

You want to share God's love for the world in word and deed. You hear God's call to "preach the gospel to the poor ... to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind" (Luke 4:18). You believe in the power of the gospel to restore broken lives and rebuild troubled neighborhoods. You want to become a church that makes a difference.

A church that ventures into holistic ministry - ministry that works toward transformation of persons and communities, building wholeness in body, soul, and spirit - can share Paul's confidence in Philippians 1:6, "that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ." So take small steps, take big steps - but let's get started on the journey!

A good launching point is to go to "Where do we start", which gives an overview of how to navigate this CD based on your church's situation.

Introducing the ministry journey

Your church can proclaim the Good News, comfort the afficted, build up the cities, and repair the cyclic devastations of broken communities. If you are willing in obedience and trust to take the first small step and then the next and the next God will take care of the big picture. (Churches That Make a Difference, page 314)
