Here is the key to thought of one of our time's central moral figures. It reveals Bonhoeffer's deep, firm roots in Christian doctrine, and it relates that doctrine to twentieth-century decisions every Christian must face. Essential for those interested in the developement of Bonhoeffer's thinking, Christ the Center is as well an important addition to Christological thought and a clear guides to how we are to believe and act in the uncertainty of the times. These lectures originally delivered at the University of Berlin (reconstructed by Eberhard Bethge from students' notes) have been completely retranslated by Edwin Robertson for this new edition.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Letter and Papers from Prison

Letters and Papers from Prison is a collection of notes and correspondence covering the period from Dietrich Bonhoeffer's arrest in 1943 to his execution by the Gestapo in 1945. The book is probably most famous, and most important, for its idea of "religionless Christianity"--an idea Bonhoeffer did not live long enough fully to develop, but whose timeliness only increases as the lines between secular and ecclesial life blur. Bonhoeffer's first mention of "religionless Christianity" came in a letter in 1944:
What is bothering me incessantly is the question what Christianity really is, or indeed who Christ really is, for us today.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Manfred Weber: Meditations on the Cross

Making sense of Jesus' suffering, death, and resurrection may be the most difficult and necessary task facing any Christian, not only during Lent, but throughout the year. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran pastor who was executed by the Nazis in 1945, constantly wrote about these themes, and made better sense of them for 20th-century Christians than almost anyone else. Meditations on the Cross, edited by Manfred Weber, collects his letters and sermons on the vexing topic of Christ's Passion. Each chapter is brief, focused, uplifting, and devastating, like any good devotional should be.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Ethics

The Christian does not live in a vacuum, says the author, but in a world of government, politics, labor, and marriage. Hence, Christian ethics cannot exist in a vacuum; what the Christian needs, claims Dietrich Bonhoeffer, is concrete instruction in a concrete situation. Although the author died before completing his work, this book is recognized as a major contribution to Christian ethics.

The root and ground of Christian ethics, the author says, is the reality of God as revealed in Jesus Christ. This reality is not manifest in the Church as distinct from the secular world; such a juxtaposition of two separate spheres, Bonhoeffer insists, is a denial of God's having reconciled the whole world to himself in Christ.
