At the Bottom of the Sea

Then Jonah prayed to his God from the belly of the fish. He prayed:

"In trouble, deep trouble, I prayed to God.

He answered me.

From the belly of the grave I cried, 'Help!'

You heard my cry.

You threw me into ocean's depths, into a watery grave,

With ocean waves, ocean breakers crashing over me.

Jeremiah 29: 11 - 13

11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Building the whole person in Christ Jesus

This blog is a "first" try at using technology to share communication between the PF volunteers concerning sexual bondage.  Over the past several years there has been much learning for me covering the subject of sexual bondage.

Here is a starting thought:    Sexual bondage is a hard bondage to overcome because it is a "natural" God given desire.   The problem is that the man's natural desire has become very corrupted.   To "uncorrupt" this natural desire and overcome sexual bondage, the man needs to settle in his heart what I call the; "Lordship" matter.

If Jesus is Lord (love is pure), then there is freedom; if the flesh is lord (lust rules the man), then there is bondage.   The process of helping a man to overcome his bondage is accomplished in many ways.

1. Finding the root of the problem.    The primary book that I ask men to read that I am mentoring is; “At the Altar of Sexual Idolatry – Steve Gallagher”. The reason behind this is because the books topics help bring the man face-to-face with himself and eventually out of denial.

2. Developing identity.   Freedom comes to a man as he realizes the importance of him having a new “identity” take hold of his heart. It is vital for the man to settle this statement in his heart; “I belong to Jesus and have been bought with a price; I am not my own Master anymore.”   **Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. (I Corinthians 6:19-20)**

3. Living the identity.   Sexual bondage is all about who is master.   The context of the scripture below has four important points; attitude/action towards others, forgiveness, faith and servant-hood.

**Jesus said to his disciples: "Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come. It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin.   So watch yourselves.      "If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, 'I repent,' forgive him."   The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"   He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.   "Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, 'Come along now and sit down to eat'?   Would he not rather say, 'Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink'? Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?   So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.' " (Luke 17:1-10)**

When the man learns to serve his Master, instead of his self (flesh); freedom starts taking hold of his heart, mind, body and soul.     These are very simple statements to a very complicated matter; but the matter of Lordship is crucial to freedom for the man trapped in sexual bondage.

"In the beginning, God created...": Bagged Lunch and a Drop of Oil: Multiplying Re$ources for Urban Ministry, I

The following series of articles is from the "Bagged Lunch and a Drop of Oil: Multiplying Re$ources for Urban Ministry" workshop which Jeremy Del Rio wrote for Reload 2006-2007.

Workshop Description:

Called but underfunded. Impassioned and hungry for more. Broke and feeling alone. How do bi-vocational youth workers pay the bills and buy the stuff necessary to get the job done? Jesus received one recorded offering in his career. The disciples didn’t get it. The masses were confused. But a boy with a bagged lunch understood, and his tuna fish sandwich fed 5,000. A husband’s debts nearly cost a widow her son’s freedom. The prophet’s response: “What’s in your hand?” A few drops of oil and a town full of jars later, she bought their freedom. Let’s explore how to turn tuna fish and empty bottles into resources for urban ministry.
