Community Study: Why is this step important?

Activity: Community Study

What it is: The community study report explores the strengths, dreams and needs of the community. The study helps the church become more familiar with the community by gathering information about the demographics, culture, history, institutions and organizational systems of the community. Getting to know the community also involves networking, or the exchange of information and ideas with residents and institutions.

Why it is helpful:A community study provides information about the context and opportunities for ministry needed for effective ministry planning; brings into focus the aspects of community life that cry out for transformation by the Gospel in word and deed; reveals the kingdom assets present in the community and the ways that God is already at work; encourages networking that plants the seeds of ministry partnerships; and helps to build bridges of familiarity and caring between the church and community.

Your church might benefit from this activity if ... you want to define your community of ministry more clearly (e.g. the neighborhood around the church, a housing project, recent immigrants); the church is disconnected from its community; you are considering a new community outreach; you are looking for possible ministry partners.
