Hi

This project proposal has been prepared in response to the growing self-sufficiency problems among the youth in our rural, urban and peri-urban areas in Kenya. Currently, there is a great gap that exists in the period between formal schooling and attainment of a job. This means that the young people who have talents in sports do not have playing fields and other structures which they need in order to nature their talent. In addition, the existing village teams are too rowdy and they do not play a good role in mentorship. The proposed solution is a small but significant contribution and will make a difference in the lives of many young people. In response to the myriad challenges currently facing the youth, the Wokovu Initiative found it imperative to start a project to nurture the latent sports talent in young people. This project will not only benefit the members of Wokovu, but will also form the nucleus of an important move toward impacting the youth and harnessing their potential to create an impact both socially and economically. The project is designed in such a way that everyone involved in whatever capacity will not only be positively influenced, but will also influence others within their circle of peers. Through this positive contact, the youth will not only learn new ways of handling the challenges in life, but will also act as a dynamic contact point for other young people undergoing or facing life challenges, opportunities and problems. They will also be uniquely positioned to benefit from members of the society, both professional and lay people, who will be willing to facilitate this project.

INTRODUCTION Group Profile The Wokovu Initiative is made up of dedicated and focused young people with a view of making a difference in the lives of their peers and positively impacting the community around them. We are a cross-section of ages, education levels and we have dynamic ideas. We believe that young people have inherent talents and abilities. We also believe that the youth can uplift both themselves and the community through hard work and perseverance. The Wokovu Initiative established the Wokovu Football Team in December 2008. It is made up of a group of young born-again Christians who fellowship together in churches around Thika ( an industrial town about 40 km from Nairobi City, Kenya) and have a passion in playing football. The idea behind it was to create a forum for recreational purposes as well as create a means of strengthening youth fellowship in our churches. With time, the group has grown to incorporate youngsters with the passion and talent to play football. We share and learn different skills from each other and this has led the team to hone its skills and develop brilliant tactics on the field and learn life lessons off the pitch.

PROPOSED PROJECT Needs Assessment Our high schools provide opportunities for young people to engage in different sports e.g. basketball, hockey, football, badminton, tennis etc. unfortunately, once these young people complete their high school education, opportunities to engage in sport become severely limited due to either a lack of facilities near their home areas; time constraints or even finances. This situation is very sad because we have very talented youth in sports. Their talent goes to waste because even for those who join colleges and universities, the opportunity to take an active part in sports is curtailed by the heavy academic workload. Other than lack of viable opportunities to continue practicing sport, the youth in Kenya face myriad problems e.g. abuse of both hard and socially acceptable drugs e.g. alcohol, cigarettes, bhang etc.; pressure of socio-economic considerations; pressure from societal stereotyping etc. There is a great need to create a forum to enable talented youth to exploit and build up their skills even up to turning professional e.g. soccer greats Oliech, Mariga etc. are making a living off their talent on the soccer pitch. A sports forum will not only provide the platform for this to happen, it will also enable other young people to engage in sports while learning life-skills. While Wokovu cannot take up every young talented person, we would like to do our part in making a difference. Our plan is to explore ways of making it possible for these young people within our sphere of influence to access the equipment and training grounds to turn this into reality.

Objectives • Preach the Gospel and show the youth that it is ‘cool’ to be saved i.e. change their perception that sports and their faith do not mix • To build and enhance awareness of opportunities available to youth in sports • Promote and nurture skills in various sports’ disciplines • Empower the youth in decision-making by giving them extensive information

Main Activities to Achieve Objectives • Sports clinics involving the youth in the churches • Talent scouting missions • Seminars held in the different churches • Crusades held where we play our matches

Current Status Wokovu Initiative has in place a soccer club which is growing fast and which has been taking part in various organised matches.

Current Benefits Through the Football Team, we have seen interest in our activities grow in the areas where we have taken part in matches. The youth in those areas are eager to emulate our example and take a positive outlook to life. Our members are also growing both in their faith and in their skill levels.

Current Challenges The team has experienced the following challenges/opportunities when interacting with other teams: • There are few church-based sports (especially football) teams in Kenya. Our local churches have not seen the need to support youth sports as a way of strengthening youth fellowship in church. • Most of the young people we meet during our matches are only vaguely aware of the gospel. Many attend church as a routine Sunday activity. This has hampered our plans to actively share the gospel with them. Most are surprised that even middle-level income earners can be staunch followers of Jesus Christ as they mostly associate salvation with those defeated by the system hence seeking solace in the church. • Maintaining the team is a putting a lot of financial constraints on the members since most do not have adequate disposable income to sustain consistent contributions. Therefore, despite their desire to be part of the team, some have opted out of membership due to financial constraints. Many a time we have cancelled an away match due to lack of finances to cater for travel/transport. • Some of the team members cannot afford the right soccer attire and the team is currently not in a position to equip the entire team and also cater for other needs. The team also lacks other essential supporting facilities such as first aid kit, joint supports such as anklets, knee caps and shin-guards. This hampers the team’s performance. • Accessing match venues through public transport is sometimes exhausting since the team members are forced to walk for kilometers from the bus stage to the match venue, thus affecting the team’s output during the team. Despite these challenges the team has worked hard to remain objective in the spirit of following through sports. In-fact the team views these perceived challenges as opportunities to exploit. In view of these, the team has revised its objective from simply a church fellowship team to an Evangelism Sports Team that will go and reach out to the people about the gospel of Jesus Christ through soccer and other sports.

Current Opportunities Our team attracts huge crowds during its matches especially when playing teams from rural areas in Thika district due to our friendly nature and exciting game. They are especially drawn to us as a result of our friendly gestures, encouraging words and they have always requested for our return. Many have been inspired to start similar teams in their local churches. The large grounds that gather during our matches can be converted to a mini crusade before the game where participating teams can have praise and worship and the host church or one of the members can given a sermon and have testimonies given by the members. The teams can also take the opportunity to pass around gifts such as bibles, devotional literature and other gifts that will endear those in attendance to seek the lord Jesus Christ.

Expected Opportunities If we equip our team very well and hence play better, we believe we can draw more young people whom we will then help. Those with skills can be encouraged to try out for various sports and we can use these opportunities to: • Preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to them • Run sustainable mentorship programs in collaboration with the different churches • Create an attractive alternative to the current temptations in play in their lives e.g. harmful vices like drug and alcohol abuse, pornography, engaging in harmful sexual practices e.g. premarital and underage sex etc. thuggery etc. • Inspire the establishment of youth sports teams in churches are a way of strengthening youth fellowship among believers/born again Christians. • Reach out to similar initiatives in different locations to share tips on how to grow together.

Expected Benefits • We will give the youth a place to belong, which is very important to them • They can socialise with their peers who will positively influence and mentor them • They can use up their excessive energy carrying out positive activities • They have an opportunity to travel and get exposure to different cultures and ways of life • They will be exposed to national/international scouts

Expected Challenges • Young people can be fickle in their attention • It may be hard to raise the amounts of money we need for our operations to run smoothly. • Some sports associations in the country may not understand our motives and may fight us. • The cost of sporting equipment is very high. • Some churches may be unwilling to cooperate with us.

Management and Administration The Wokovu Initiative is currently professionally run by the founders and as the work grows, we will actively and passionately continue to reach to the young people. We however believe in all-inclusive consultation and we will not hesitate to reach out for advice and professional support.

BENEFICIARIES Our key beneficiaries are youth aged between 14 and 35 years who attend local churches in Thika and would wish to join the team and nurture their talent. • School leavers • College students • Young entrepreneurs • The various churches that the youth worship in/attend.

Benefits to the Beneficiaries • They will get an opportunity to recreate in a godly atmosphere • They will get an opportunity to fellowship, both believers and non-believers. • They will get an opportunity to evangelize i.e. live out their faith before their peers and use the opportunity to spread the gospel • They will get an opportunity to grow in their faith in Christ as the team will enhance discipleship • School leavers will get a chance to continue playing sports and improving their skill levels. They will also have somewhere to spend time with peers doing positive things. • College students will have a chance for some recreation and to influence other young people. • Young entrepreneurs will have an opportunity to discover and nurture their talent and unwind after work. • The various churches that the youth worship in/attend will have vibrant youth fellowships and increased membership.

Contributions of Beneficiaries • Time • Token membership fee • Determination and discipline in order to succeed in the chosen sport • Contributions in kind e.g. literature, etc. • Support (congregations) and Venue (churches) for our meetings

Why We Need Your Support The Wokovu Initiative is a group made up of members with little or no disposable income. We are currently relying on members contributions which is very little considering the scope of the work. We strongly believe we can make a big difference given adequate resources to firmly establish our sports initiative. The youth are the future of any country and if we can impact their lives positively, we can ensure the future for generations to come.
