Dietrich Bonhoeffer Biography (Theopedia)

Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906 – 1945) was a German Lutheran theologian and pastor. He was also a participant in the resistance movement against Nazism. Bonhoeffer was involved in various schemes formulated by members of the German Military Intelligence Office to assassinate Adolf Hitler and in March 1943 was arrested, imprisoned and ultimately hanged just before the end of the Second World War in Europe.

This book by the German Theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of the great classics of Christian thought. It is centred around an exposition of the Sermon on the Mount, in which Bonhoeffer spells out what it means to follow Christ. It was first published in In 1937, when the rise of the Nazi regime was underway in Germany. It was against this background that Bonhoeffer's theology of costly discipleship developed, which was to lead ultimately to his death.
