Curriculum Review of Stop the Chaos
By Sarah Barton (Sagamore Institute Faith in Communities, 2005)
Stop the Chaos: How to Get Control of Your Life By Beating Alcohol & Drugs is a workbook published by the Hazelden Foundation, a leader in alcohol and drug rehabilitation, education and recovery. It is designed for both those who are struggling with addiction as well as those who are concerned about a loved one’s substance abuse. Intended for adults, this workbook includes more educational reading than many workbooks. The informational sections are supplemented by exercises helping readers to apply the information to their own lives. In addition, personal stories help to provoke thought about whether similar situations exist in readers’ lives.
The workbook will help readers to explore, among others, the following topics:
- Am I an addict or alcoholic?
- What is a chemical addiction?
- Am I ready for recovery?
- Understanding the recovery process
- Building a stable foundation for recovery
- Identifying high-risk situations
- Coping with using urges
- Dealing with emotions
- Compulsive behavior and isolation
- Spirituality and recovery
- What do I tell others about my dependency?
- Relationships and sex in recovery
- Self-defeating beliefs and behaviors
- Avoiding a relapse to chemical use
- Prescription and nonprescription drugs
- The importance of self-care
At the end of each chapter, a summary is offered to recapitulate its important points so as to remind readers about what they have learned.
Although this workbook may be used by individuals, it also is an excellent resource to stimulate small group discussion and sharing in an in-depth recovery program.
