What I can offer as media-maker and consultant

I'm a consultant listed on Idealist.org.

I'm also an award-winning, veteran producer/director of videos and still photo campaigns for socially committed organizations, especially ones serving the disadvantaged: youth, minorities, the disabled, and women. The media I create is often used to fundraise and do pr for organizations as well as to educate their constituencies about their mission, methods, and accomplishments. I've created reasonably-priced media for : • Common Cents • Follow Through(a continuation of Head Start) • The Resolving Conflict Creatively Program • Covenant House • World of Difference (combating prejudice) • AIDS Education Initiative in the NYC Public Schools.

Since 1978, I've had my own very small public interest not-for-profit, 501(c)(3), Groundswell, dedicated to amplifying the voices of the disadvantaged using cutting-edge media, so I understand your world fairly well.

I've written for 3-2-1 Contact and Reading Rainbow and produced tv shows for WCBS-TV and WNET that have brought me the Edward R. Murrow Award and three Emmy nominations.

I have an MFA from Yale Drama, have taught filmmaking and writing at Columbia, NYU, Brooklyn College, and Bennington. Dial Press published STAYING POWER, my book about unrich, unfamous performers, designed to give young artists the vision that they can build fulfilling stage careers without being celebrities.

I'm fluent in Spanish and French, served in the Peace Corps in Latin America, and have worked in Latino communities like Hunt's Point.

I recently created a website where veterans and families can archive their stories of service. It's at http://harvestinghistory.org and features a short sampler of video interviews I've already collected.

I'm currently editing a documentary about an extraordinary dance troupe from Memphis composed of young adults with Down syndrome. You can see a rough edit of that project at: http://peterbarton.blip.tv/file/2111134.
