Computer Lab Maintenance: An Introduction to Internet and Computer Security

Internet & Computer Security 101This presentation introduces Windows computer lab maintenance tasks - mostly basic, but some more advanced. It also lists free or low-cost software options to accomplish tasks like virus protection, spyware removal, and network security.

The following self-test, to be given before showing the presentation, gives a general idea of what topics will be covered.

  

 

BASICS

___ 1) I have installed Service Pack 2 on a Windows XP computer.

___ 2) I have recently done a Windows Update on a computer.

___ 3) I know how to configure Automatic Updates.

___ 4) I use a firewall when I connect to the Internet.

___ 5) I have at least one anti-spyware program installed on a computer.

___ 6) I have recently ran a scan on the computer for spyware.

___ 7) I keep the spyware programs updated.

___ 8) I have an anti-virus program installed.

___ 9) I run virus scans at least once a month.

___ 10) I know how to schedule virus scans.

___ 11) I update my anti-virus program regularly.

___ 12) I know how to create user accounts.

___ 13) I know how to configure Internet Explorer’s Content Advisor.

 

NOT-SO-BASICS

 

___ 14) I know how to boot into “Safe Mode.”

___ 15) I know how to do a “System Restore.”

___ 16) I know about the “HOSTS” file.

___ 17) I have used advanced tools associated with anti-spyware and anti-virus programs.

___ 18) I use more than just the Windows Firewall and have configured the program.

___ 19) I have performed a repair installation of an operating system such as Windows XP.

___ 20) I know what WEP or WPA is and have configured it for a wireless network.

___ 21) I have configured Microsoft’s Shared Computer Toolkit in a computer lab.

 

OTHER STUFF

 

___ 22) I have never gotten a virus or spyware on a computer.

___ 23) I have gotten a virus or spyware on a computer, and had someone else remove it.

___ 24) I have gotten a virus or spyware on a computer, and I removed it myself.
