What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service , an independent federal agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering.
The purpose of AmeriCorps is to engage AmeriCorps members in direct service and capacity-building to address unmet community needs (like the Peace Corps, but within the United States). Each year, AmeriCorps offers 75,000 opportunities for adults of all ages and backgrounds to serve. Since 1994, over 500,000 AmeriCorps members have served with thousands of nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and faith-based organizations nationwide.
AmeriCorps provides grants directly to organizations that sponsor service programs. TechMission has received one of those AmeriCorps grants and therefore is responsible for recruiting, placing, training, and supervising AmeriCorps members to serve in our TechMission Corps program.
What is the Ed Award?
After successful completion of their term of service, AmeriCorps members earn an AmeriCorps Education Award that can be used to pay for college or graduate school at Title IV schools, or to repay qualified student loans. Full-time Members earn an Ed Award of $4,725. Some colleges will even match the Ed Award (apply twice the amount toward your bill). For more information about the Ed Award, visit the AmeriCorps benefits site.
