Summary:

Alcohol and the Church provides context for anyone exploring the idea of ministering to alcoholics.  The first section, “The Church Should,” argues that alcohol misuse is a societal crisis to which the church must respond. Fuad, a leader in the PCUSA denomination’s efforts to assist those struggling with substance abuse believes that the challenge is for the church to move past ignorance, embarrassment, and social stigma and make a commitment to reach out.  In the book’s second section, “The Church Can,” Fuad addresses the nuts and bolts of starting an alcohol abuse ministry, describes what the Bible says about alcohol and drunkenness, highlights the importance of a spiritual dimension during recovery, and distinguishes between alcoholism and alcohol abuse. The third section, “The Church Does,” elaborates on the detailed steps necessary for setting up a program and gives ideas for actions that may be taken by individuals, congregations, coalitions of churches and denominations.  The Appendix contains an outline for study/syllabus, the twelve steps of AA and resources (books, pamphlets, videos, curricula, magazines, publishers, organizations, training and seminaries) that may be helpful for those still seeking to learn more.
