Summary:
90 Days One Day at a Time is a book of meditations and prayers for 90 days of recovery from alcoholism. The thoughts and reflections in the book are based upon the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, but author John Behnke breaks the steps into separate parts to help the reader fully understand and process each step. He also branches into areas not specifically covered by the 12 steps but that help the alcoholic not only keep sober but also regain the parts of life he or she has lost:
· accepting alcoholism as a part of life forever;
· renewing interest in the arts, community service, and hobbies;
· renewing friendships and enjoying normal social functions again;
· gaining a new energy and focus at work;
· restructuring personal values; and
· renewing ties with family members.
Behnke also includes meditations designed to help readers work through their fear, anger, resentment, and many of the other issues facing recovering alcoholics. Each day includes the author’s reflections on a specific topic, the beginning of a prayer for the reader to finish, and a section for the reader to plan action steps for the day.
Why does FASTEN recommend this resource?
This book would aid anyone going through the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. It breaks down the steps into daily prayers and actions. The focus is on God, or the Higher Power, but the book is not specifically Christian and could be tailored to suit most religious beliefs. Behnke introduces a topic and gives his reflections but allows, and encourages, the reader to finish with his or her own personal reflections, prayers, and plan for the day. Taking recovery and sobriety one day at a time is the book’s mantra.
