Summary:

12 Step Prayers for a Way Out is a companion book to The 12 Steps: A Way Out.  Also focusing on the use of the 12 steps to recover from growing up in a dysfunctional family, this book encourages and guides the reader in the spiritual side of the 12 step program.  No specific theology or religion is addressed, however, and the book is designed so that any individual can tailor it to their own beliefs.  Each step includes a brief explanation of the step, often including an illustrative story, and several prayers to accompany the step.  The prayers range from formal to casual and include both prose and poetry.  Some prayers are very broad and general, and some are much more specific.

Why does FASTEN recommend this resource?

Various faith-based programs may find this book a useful companion resource if their participations are using the workbook, The 12 Steps: A Way Out.  The prayers aid in the reader’s attempts to focus on God or their Higher Power as he/she moves through the recovery process.  The prayers are specific enough to be helpful but leave much room for the reader to interpret or adapt them to their own beliefs or needs.
